How To Avoid Rogue Online Casinos

By: Mark Freedman, Thursday January 22nd 2009

Rogue casinos represent all the bad websites that flooded the internet in the advent of online gambling. It is not always easy to spot rouge casino sites because they know how to pose as real casinos. One of the reasons that some players prefer to visit land-based casinos compared to online casinos give is that the industry is full of scams. Seasoned online players are no stranger to rogue casinos. As the term itself signifies, these are charlatans, swindlers— online gambling sites that pose as legit operators but, in reality, are just there waiting for unsuspecting players to sign up so they can take away their money.

Rogue casinos are those online casinos that do not credit due bonuses earned by players; delay or default in remitting withdrawals asked by players or otherwise renege on their commitments. Though there are not many of them around, online players should learn to identify them so that they can avoid them.

The simplest way to identify rogue casinos is to check out the blacklist of online casino watch dog organizations. Casino Advisor is one such watch dog organization. CasinoAdvisor's blacklist has some 35 rogue casinos. Other blacklists can be found on the websites of Casino Meister and Wizard of Odds.

Checking out blacklists is a beginning. Ultimately players must learn to identify rogue casinos by studying their websites. It is possible that a particular casino has not come to the notice of the watch dog organization and hence is not on their list. It is also possible that though an online casino is not exemplary it has not yet reached the level of a rogue casino and that is the reason it is not on the list. Identifying rogue casinos is not such a daunting task as it may at first appear to be. Casino Advisor has made this task easier by listing few pointers in its article 'Identifying Rogue Casinos'. Players should look at the reputation of those associated with the online casinos such as the owner, the licensor and the affiliate.

The best way, however, in identify rogue casinos is sharing information with other players. There are several online forums and message boards where online casino players regularly interact and share experiences. The more popular ones are the forums at Casino Advisor, Winner Online and Casino Meister. It is essential to use these forums as a medium of exchange of information. Players should read what others have to say but put down their experiences as well. Delays in withdrawals, enforcing a bonus condition that was not mentioned upfront, games freezing midway are the kind of information that is often found about online casinos on these forums. A player may have had a bad experience with a particular online casino. He puts it down in the forum or message board. He will get responses from other players. If other players have only good things to say about that casino then probably his experience was a one-off exception and he can breathe easy. If other players have similar stories to tell then he should withdraw his funds and get out as fast as he can.

Online

Players should use the forums to share good experiences as well. Good online casinos will not associate themselves with second rate service providers. These may be those who audit gaming operations or those who process financial transaction or provide any of the services that an online casino needs. Good service providers will not associate with rogue casinos. In this manner identifying good online casinos can be useful in identifying rogues. If the service providers to a casino do not provide services to known good casinos then there could be something wrong.

I really hate the fact that there are still so many rogue online casinos out there and that players need to be very careful of where they choose and decide to play at. I for one know that by continuing to play at the casinos that I've played at for a long time or by looking on sites that are trusted like Casino Advisor that I can always have a great online casino to play at that I'll have a good experience playing.

I like to look at the casinos age first and foremost as a factor when determining on whether I should play at an online casino. I find that in general the longer the online casino has been around the more of a solid reputation they generally have and thus the more likelihood that they're going to be a good place to play.

It's always going to be hard to fully avoid rogue online casinos but you just have to play a bit in order to see where you stand with an online casino in terms of their service. A good way to gauge how good an online casino is is though their customer support I've learned.

At the first signs of trouble with an online casino that you're playing at I think that you should start looking for any negative information or player feedback about them. I think it's really a good way to see what other players have to say about casinos when trying to figure out whether you should abandon ship!

Onlinecasinosuite which is another top online casino guide like casinoadvisor.com offers a really great list that appears to be updated regularly with rogue online casinos out there. I think that them and the CasinoMeister are great resources for learning about this kind of stuff and which online casinos you should avoid. In general though the online casinos that seem to be represented here on CasinoAdvisor all seem to be reputable online casinos that are worthy of playing at.

I hate rogue casinos and I think that at one time or another we've all played at one. I beleive that all online casino should be scrutinized by regulatory bodies like eCOGRA hopefully that's what the future will hold for us!

I beleive that if you play at the casinos here on Casino Advisor that you won't have any issues. I play at several of the casinos that are listed on their homepage as top 10 rated casinos and they're all pretty good actually.

Good advice guys!!! ;-) I know that myself I try to stick to doing what you guys practice in general in that I'll only play at or consider playing at online casinos that I've seen that are represented well throughout casino portals and gambling information sites that I'll frequent.

Simply look at casinos that are being represented the most at online casino website and portals that provide information to players like ourselves. This should give you a good indication as to what sites are good ones to play at. Also if you look for user feedback like this site offers you'll find a wealth of information about many of the different online casinos that are out there to choose from and play at.

I just play at casinos that I see online as being the most popular if you do that you'll probably be fine rather then searching though the lists of rogue online casinos. If you trust what you read for example at online message boards with regards to rogue casinos then you'll likely find that there's something that's not so good to be said about every online casino that's being discussed, lol...

Rogue casinos don't really last very long and additionally those people out there that are affiliates in the industry like what I beleive Casino Advisor people are wouldn't work with Rogue casinos. I think that you're pretty good if you select and play at casinos featured here on this site or sites that rank in prominent positions in google and other major search engines for keyword searches such as online casino, online casinos, etc...

A simple search in google often times reveals enough information about a casino that you really need in order to deduce whether the online casino is rogue or not. Do things like search for 'rogue + casino_name' in google. If you find that you get more then a few complaints from players that are registering then there's a good chance that they are in fact a rogue casino and you're not going to want to play there. As a good rule another good thing to do is to play only at casinos that you see are most popular online (ie. Party Casino, Jackpot City, River Belle, InterCasino) the big brands online. You're more then save while playing at their casinos.

A word of caution for all online gamblers – don’t play at rogue online casinos that have been blacklisted by organizations that check online casinos for their business practices. There are online casinos that are openly rogue and don’t even care about their reputation anymore but continue to accept players. It’s important to regularly check for rogue casinos so you don’t make a mistake of signing up and depositing money with these fradulent companies.

What are the signs of a rogue casino?

Most commonly, you will only care about the worst possible thing that can happen, and you will only start caring once it happens to you. That would be the non-payment of wins. Therefore, it’s important to keep an eye on casinos that have not payed winnings to someone in the past, or/and make it their business practice to withhold large winnings and then refer the customer to some fine print in Terms & Conditions. Slow payment of wins is another red flag, as it may mean the casino is insolvent.

Sometimes you won’t even know what’s going on but will be losing money, and you will be losing money because the casino is crooked and is not using an honest random number generator (RNG), giving the casino an unfair advantage. American customers are particularly susceptible to this, as they’re forced to play in unlicenced casinos.

Some more signs of a rogue casino may include unfair decisions in disputes, rude support personnel, not caring if you got a gambling addiction problem and letting you play, and basically anything else that you deserve and the casino is withholding from you.

How do I avoid rogue casinos?

That’s simple. Just visit online casinos we promote at GamblersFever as we talk to our friends in the industry a lot, and we know which casino is rogue and which is not. Alternatively, you are welcome to search for lists of blacklisted and rogue casinos yourself, to double check and to make sure. You’ll find there are no such casinos promoted on this site.

Normally you’re unlikely to run into problems if you’re in a regulated market and are depositing money with one of the most popular brands, though you do need to pay attention as well. For example, the UKGC licence is very strict and is actively enforced, and you can even do an online check to see if your casino really is licenced.

Most problems arise in markets such as USA, Australia, Canada, and various other countries that have a problem with regulation so the big brands are absent and people are forced to pick among online casinos of lesser quality, not knowing which one is good and which is bad.

Online gambling is not dangerous if…

…you visit sites that separate wheat from chaff and tell you which casino is good and which isn’t. This is the buffer between you as a player and the casino, and sites such as this one make sure that the player is connected to the good casino where he/she will enjoy gambling and will get a fair game and fair treatment. Never underestimate the role of casino review sites that steer the player in the right direction.
